All vessels utilize a fixed bed reactor ‘charged’ with a carefully selected SULFATREAT absorbent chosen to suit your processing conditions and operational parameters, with solutions available for the treatment of dry and water-saturated gas streams in addition to light liquid hydrocarbons.
How Does It Work?
SULFATREAT is a dry, granular, iron oxide based product, available in a range of formulations designed to optimize performance for various processing specifications.
During the H2S removal process, gas and liquid streams flow through the SULFATREAT product, resulting in a chemical reaction, which removes H2S to form pyrite—an environmentally safe, stable compound.
Engineering Successful Outcomes
All fixed bed solutions for H2S removal require an upstream separator (demister) to remove free liquids from the gas stream prior to the sweetening process.
This is because any free liquids remaining in the gas stream,—including both water and oil droplets—can cause various issues including bed compaction and pressure drop issues, and ultimately lead to equipment damage and/or processing system failure.
Single SULFATREAT vessel options offer proven performance and simple operation. Vessels are typically vertically oriented with sour gas inlet and relief valve located towards the top of the vessel. A deflector plate directs incoming gas downward through the SULFATREAT product, which rests on a mesh support bed. A deflector plate below the bed directs sweetened gas to an outlet located towards the bottom of the vessel.
In cases with low H2S load, a single vessel system utilizing the appropriate SULFATREAT medium will often suffice and will support long bed lives—and minimal capital investment. Once the H2S has reacted with the SULFATREAT, it is chemically bound into the medium and will not escape. Over time, the SULFATREAT becomes exhausted and will need to be replaced.
When bed life comes to an end, interruption of gas flow (or a temporary vessel bypass) is necessary for a short interval while a replacement bed of SULFATREAT is prepared.
Lead/Lag Two-Vessel System
Lead/Lag arrangements call for two vessels to be arranged in a series, with input gas and liquid streams flowing through one SULFATREAT bed in the first vessel and then fed into the next vessel, consecutively.
Each vessel within a two-vessel system operates in the same manner a single-vessel system however; a two-vessel lead/lag configuration supports more efficient use of the SULFATREAT absorbent, greater process reliability—and no interruption in unit operation.
In a two-vessel system, the lead vessel performs as the ‘working unit’ to remove H2S at the front-end of the treatment process. Outlet H2S concentrations increase over time, as the SULFATREAT product is slowly exhausted. As gas exits the lead vessel, it may be directed to the second ‘lag’ vessel for further polishing, or it can bypass the second vessel altogether up to a pre-determined, specified H2S outlet measurement.
Because virtually all the SULFATREAT medium in the “lead” vessel can be reacted to near completion (due to the “back-up” afforded by the “lag” vessel) the two-vessel system delivers more efficient use of the SULFATREAT product.
